The fetus
- Pregnancy is counted from the first day of your last period, even though conception has not yet occurred.
- The uterus is preparing by building up a new lining.
- The ovaries are maturing follicles containing eggs in preparation for ovulation.
Your body
Physical changes
- Your body is having its period and the uterine lining is being shed.
- The hormones FSH and LH begin to rise to prepare for the next ovulation.
Common symptoms
- Menstrual cramps and bleeding as usual.
- No pregnancy symptoms yet.
Good to know
- Start taking folic acid (400 micrograms per day) now if you are planning to become pregnant.
- Stop smoking and avoid alcohol if you are trying to conceive.
- Book an appointment with a midwife if you haven't already.
Food & nutrition
Good to eat
- Foods rich in folic acid such as spinach, broccoli and beans.
- Whole grain products and green leafy vegetables.
Be aware of
- Limit caffeine intake to a maximum of 300 mg per day (about 3 cups of coffee).
Avoid
- Alcohol entirely if you are planning a pregnancy.
- Tobacco and nicotine products.
Supplements
- Folic acid 400 micrograms daily, ideally starting at least one month before conception.
Exercise
Continue with your regular exercise routine. Regular physical activity increases the chances of a healthy pregnancy.
Suggested activities
- Brisk walks
- Running or cycling if you are used to it
- Strength training as usual
